Title: Photographing Deconstructing Stigma at the Massachusetts State House
As a portrait photographer based in Massachusetts, I’ve been fortunate to work on projects that truly matter—but few have been as powerful as Deconstructing Stigma. Recently, I had the this important mental health awareness campaign installed at the Massachusetts State House.
What is Deconstructing Stigma?
If you're not familiar, Deconstructing Stigma is a photo and story exhibit launched by McLean Hospital that shares the real-life experiences of individuals living with mental health challenges. Through large-format portraits and deeply personal narratives, the campaign breaks down stereotypes and opens up critical conversations around mental illness. As a photographer, being part of this campaign has been a deeply humbling and inspiring experience.
Photographing for Change
My role in this campaign was to capture portraits of participants—each of them brave, vulnerable, and strong. These sessions were not just about taking a great photo; they were about creating a safe, honest space where each person could be seen and celebrated for who they are. Every click of the shutter felt like part of something larger—part of dismantling shame, stigma, and silence.
Seeing these portraits on display in such a historic and public space as the Massachusetts State House,is incredibly moving. It’s not every day that your work ends up on the walls of one of the most symbolic buildings in the state—but more importantly, it's not every day that so many people get the chance to pause, read, and reflect on the mental health journeys of their fellow citizens.
Why This Matters to Me
As a portrait photographer in Massachusetts, I’ve always believed that a photograph can tell a story that words alone sometimes can’t. Through this campaign, I’ve met people from all walks of life—teachers, veterans, nurses, parents—who’ve had the courage to step in front of my lens and say, “This is who I am. This is what I’ve been through. And I’m still standing.”
Their strength continues to inspire me daily.
Mental Health Awareness Through Photography
I’m proud to have been a contributing photographer for Deconstructing Stigma for several years, and it’s a collaboration I hope continues to grow. Exhibits like this remind us that mental health is health, and that sharing our stories—through words and images—is a powerful way to promote understanding, compassion, and change.
If you're visiting Boston, I encourage you to stop by the State House and see the display for yourself. And if you or someone you love is struggling, know that you are not alone. There are resources, there is support, and there is hope.
Thank you to McLean Hospital and all the participants who have shared their stories. I am honored to play a small role in amplifying your voices.
