The Endangered Lobstermen
In the latest addition to my Endangered Lobstermen photoseries I traveled to Addison, Maine to meet Christopher Beal.
“I was a fifth-generation fisherman.
I lobster fished from the time I was fourteen ‘til six years ago.
I took over my dad’s business, Beals Mooring and Island Service and I expanded it. I quit fishing because the regulations got so steep, between the cost of bait and fuel and all the regulations you had to keep up with, I decided this was best for me.
A lot of my friends and family still fish and a lot of them are struggling, everything is so expensive.
I take care of most of the moorings for the boats-pleasure boats, lobster boats, between Addison, Jonesport, Beals, Roque Bluffs. I send a few to Cutler and Bucks Harbor.
That’s what I’m doing now.
I love fishing but it just got regulated out basically.”
